 1980 年，臺灣的水彩曾一度回復原本抒情的「中國風」水彩創作，當時水彩風景畫流派形成一股巨流，以舒曾祉、金哲夫、王舒、徐樂芹等人為代表。舒曾祉同時亦擅長水墨畫創作，且專研易理、禪學，在同輩畫家中色彩較為豐富。

晚年穿著長裙，留著長髮的舒曾祉，打扮得比一般婦人都還要有女人味，他並非是性別認同上的問題，而是藉由女性化的裝扮，來表達後現代人體表演藝術，以自身為舞臺，讓所有認識他的人，能由最直接的方式明白：人生就是戲，在人生舞臺上就如同在演一齣戲、而每個人的人生，就是一場夢。
